SPACES N PLACES STORY
Spaces N Places was founded by Shaheer Mansour in 2019. Shaheer started Spaces N Places as an architectural drawings series that mainly questions the human method of documenting trips when he found that all the pictures on the Internet were basically the same, and that included his shots; nothing was personalized, although we are different people and we can’t experience things the same way. Taking pictures made him realize that he was tied up with his mobile – making sure he had enough memory and that the battery was charged, because we all want to be able to capture that moment while rushing in the streets. So he was very eager to find a unique way to document these places, and as drawing was a skill that he always had but misused when he was traveling, he became keen on prioritizing drawing as a way of documenting all of the spaces and places he travels to.

Shaheer had a passion for travel, but drawing the places made his trips different and made him experience those places differently. Stepping back, pausing, and spending the time drawing spaces and places made him take the time to appreciate their contextual significant and history, whether it’s emphasized in their materials or design details and forms. Spaces n Places is the name Mansour chose for his documentation project. If you're like me, you might think it's just a safe go-to name to express the idea of drawing places and the spaces they stand in, but Mansour had a much broader perspective for that choice. As he puts it: “a space is a void or an open area that could be transformed into a 'place' with human intervention, and maybe even change its function. An example of that would be Tahrir Square in Egypt. Tahrir Square was once a space that was used as a roundabout in Cairo, but in 2011 when millions of people occupied that space for weeks and created history through it, they were able to transform that space into a powerful meaningful place that’s now worth documenting.”
